Bert Raphael
Dr.
Bertram Raphael was born in New York City. He studied at RPI, Brown University,
and MIT, which awarded him a Ph.D. degree in Mathematics in 1964. Since then he
has resided in California. He is author of The Thinking Computer (W.H.Freeman
& Co., 1974) and numerous technical articles, and has lectured throughout
the world on artificial intelligence and other topics in computer science.
After a 25-year career as a computer scientist and manager at SRI International
and Hewlett Packard, Dr. Raphael joined his wife in 1990 to help operate a
family travel agency business. Since selling the agency in 1997, Dr. Raphael
consults for travel agencies and other small businesses on their office
automation and management systems.
Bert spent 25 years volunteering with the National
Ski Patrol, and teaches CPR for the Palo Alto Chapter of the Red Cross. He has
been a member of the Rotary Club of Mountain View since 1990, serving as its
president for the 1998-1999 Rotary year and as an Assistant District Governor
this past year. Currently he is Technology Chair for District 5170.
